Expedition Pico Mulhacén – Sierra Nevada Traverse (2026)

Join me for a demanding and immersive 7-day mountain traverse to the summit of Pico Mulhacén, the highest peak in mainland Spain. This is not a standard summit hike—it’s a full alpine-style expedition and part of the ongoing “Road to Mont Blanc” progression.

Over six days in the mountains, we’ll link remote valleys, cross high ridgelines, sleep in mountain refugios, and spend nights in wild camp locations where conditions and terrain allow. The route moves through high alpine environments, gradually building altitude, exposure, and endurance before the summit push.

While there is a planned itinerary, this remains a true expedition—flexible, weather-dependent, and shaped by mountain conditions and group decisions. Adjustments may be made at any stage to prioritise safety and the best possible mountain experience.

We move as a small committed team, with a maximum of 7 participants, keeping the group tight, efficient, and able to adapt to the terrain and conditions we encounter.

Important Notes

  • This is a physically demanding expedition, not a guided walk

  • Confidence in Grade 2 scrambling and multi-day mountain trekking is essential

  • Participants must be fully self-sufficient with gear, food, and camping equipment

  • Weather and conditions may lead to route adaptations or tactical changes

  • Decisions will be made as a team where appropriate, but safety always comes first

Wild Camping

A big part of this expedition is spending multiple nights wild camping in remote mountain areas. This is where the trip really feels like an expedition—carrying everything we need, choosing our camps carefully, and living simply in the mountains.

Participants will need to bring their own essential wild camping kit, including:

  • Lightweight tent (or bivvy setup)

  • Sleeping bag suitable for cold mountain conditions (autumn nights can drop close to freezing)

  • Sleeping mat for insulation and comfort

  • Rucksack large enough to carry all personal kit, food, and group gear if required (50–70L recommended)

  • Cooking system (stove, fuel, pot)

  • Headtorch with spare batteries

  • Warm layers for static evening conditions

  • Waterproof jacket and trousers

  • Personal food for multi-day trekking

  • Water bottles or hydration system (minimum 2L capacity recommended)

We will be moving through varied terrain and camping in exposed mountain environments, so keeping your kit light, reliable, and tested is important.

Expedition Buddy System (Recommended)

To make the load more manageable, it is strongly recommended to pair up with an expedition buddy. Sharing certain items—such as tents, cooking systems, or group gear—can significantly reduce weight and make the expedition more efficient and enjoyable. It also adds an extra layer of safety and teamwork in the mountains.

If you’re joining solo, don’t worry—we can help match people up before the trip where possible.Tent Hire Option

If you do not have your own tent,

hire tents will be available

for this expedition. These will be lightweight, mountain-appropriate tents suitable for multiple nights of wild camping.
